Back in 1974, Erno Rubik invented the toy that has frustrated millions of us. To help commemorate the anniversary, GEB reader ‘Will’ has created a very cool Google Earth visualization.

giant rubik's cube

It looks like a giant Rubik’s Cube sitting in the North Sea off the coast of the U.K., and well, it is. However, he spent some time making it just the right size.

In Will’s words:

I wondered how large an object a user could make in SketchUp. I also wondered how large a cube you could make if you took one Rubik’s Cube in every one of the 43 quintillion possible permutations that the cube can be in and piled them up into… a cube. I clearly had too much time on my hands back then.

You can check it out for yourself in Google Earth by loading this KMZ file.

Great work, Will!
