Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Google Earth

by Timothy Whitehead on Feb.13, 2017, under 3D Models, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, California, Denmark, England, Germany, Google Earth News, Google Earth Tips, Google Sky, Google maps, Hawaii, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Natural Landmarks, Netherlands, Sightseeing, Street Views, USA

Each year we celebrate Valentine’s Day by having a look at either heart shaped objects or romantic messages in Google Earth. Last year we had a look at heart shaped islands around the world.

This year we are looking at some heart shapes formed in very different ways.

A heart shaped fish trap on Cimei island in Penghu County, Taiwan. See ground level photos here.

We came across this story about a British farmer that created a heart shaped meadow in memory of his wife. It was apparently first spotted by balloon rather than with Google Earth. It would appear that the farmer planted the trees around 1999:

And by 2014 we can see they have grown considerably but are not yet as high as the previously existing trees in the area:

And finally we have a building in Melbourne, Australia, which has a heart shaped roof:

To find the above locations in Google Earth, download this KML file.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Google Earth

This Sunday is Valentine’s Day. As we do each year we are sharing this collection of heart shapes to be found in Google Earth, which you can also see in this YouTube video. To add to that collection we found a few heart-shaped islands:

Clockwise from top left: 1. Galešnjak, Croatia, 2. Heart Reef, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, 3. Tavarua, Fiji, 4. Makepeace Island, Australia, 5. Anfi, Las Palmas, Spain, 6. Tung Talay Luang, Thailand.

You can view them in Google Earth with this KML file.

The largest known heart in the solar system is actually on Pluto and you can view it in Google Earth with this KML file.

Valentine’s Day in Google Earth

Tomorrow is Valentine’s day. As we have done in past years, we are sharing a collection of hearts from Google Earth Hacks. You can also view them in the YouTube video below:

Here is our Valentine’s Day message from Google Earth Blog, powered by GeoGreeting.com.

You could also take a virtual romantic vacation by touring Venice in Google Earth, as it has just received new 3D imagery. We do not recommend taking a Gondola ride as Google’s 3D does not handle water very well and the canals are quite bumpy.

Venice
Venice, Italy. Be sure to try turning on ‘Historical Imagery’ to compare the new 3D mesh with the older style 3D building models.

While researching this post we were made aware of how many sights in Google Earth are moments in time as well as space.

Marry Me D
This marriage proposal in a field that we looked at in 2006 is now part of the suburbs.

We couldn’t even find the Marriage proposal in Street View from this post. It is right outside the GooglePlex and has over 50 different dates of Street View, but as far as we could tell, the one with the marriage proposal in is missing.

Valentine’s Day in Google Earth

by Mickey Mellen on Feb.14, 2014, under 3D Models, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, California, Denmark, England, Germany, Google Earth News, Google Earth Tips, Google Sky, Google maps, Hawaii, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Natural Landmarks, Netherlands, Sightseeing, Street Views, USA

Once again, in honor of Valentine’s Day we share some of the best romantic placemarks for Google Earth. To start, you can check out this old entry from Google Maps Mania which includes a wide variety of Valentine’s Day goodies.

Beyond that you can check out the collection of hearts provided by Google Earth Hacks, or see a video of them in action below:

For those of you that are still looking for love, Random Markers has posted a slick little app that shows recent personal ads via the Google Earth plug-in. It pulls the content from Google Base and then displays them in the plug-in. As per the site, it works best in the US because of the higher density of data to use (more personal ads).
If you’re still looking for more Valentine’s Day goodness, you can view a collection of marriage proposals , or check out a Valentine’s Day message from Google Earth Blog, powered by GeoGreeting.com.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
