New images from Hiroshima have been added to Google Maps Street View according to the official Google (japanese) blog. This is the Hiroshima Peace Memorial also known as the Atomic Bomb Dome.
Google’s description: “On August 6, 1945 at 8:15am, the first nuclear device to be used in warfare exploded almost directly above this building. The annihilated structure became an iconic symbol of the bomb’s devastation, and despite rebuilding the rest of the city, Hiroshima decided to keep the Dome in its post-war condition to stand as a living testament to the horror of nuclear conflict.”
According to Wikipedia: Within the first two to four months of the bombings, the acute effects killed 90,000–166,000 people in Hiroshima and 60,000–80,000 in Nagasaki,[1] with roughly half of the deaths in each city occurring on the first day.
